In every journey, we strive to create a positive impact on the people, economy and environment of each place we're privileged to visit.

Travel has the potential to enrich, but it can also threaten the fabric and spirit of fragile places. We believe travel should give back to the planet rather than threaten it — and across Japan, Singapore and China we take tangible measures to sustain and revitalise the communities that welcome us.

Communities benefit economically

  • We favour locally owned restaurants and establishments away from the obvious, overcrowded spots — so the benefit of your trip reaches the people who welcome us.
  • We visit local markets over large retailers, where you can buy directly from artisans and small-scale makers.
  • Where entrance fees fund upkeep, we cover them — and where a site is free, we make a donation.

Culture preserved and revitalised

  • We deepen understanding through a region's historical, cultural and religious life, and arrange access to festivals and special events.
  • We often appoint a local expert to bring each place to life through the stories only they can tell.
  • We share how to engage respectfully — appropriate conduct, dress, and the etiquette of asking before a photograph.

The natural environment conserved

  • We build in walking and cycling where we can — greener, and a finer way to see a place up close.
  • We ask suppliers for well-maintained or alternative-energy vehicles, and comply strictly within every protected area.
  • Where a journey includes wildlife, we take practical steps to minimise any disturbance to flora and fauna.

Slow, considered travel

  • Our well-paced itineraries — more time in fewer places — lower the carbon footprint of a journey.
  • Spending longer in each place, you not only tread more lightly, you also see and learn far more.
  • We keep our own house in order too: a near paperless office, minimal single-use plastic, digital itineraries.
